Be Careful When Choosing a Natural Weight Loss Remedy

Introduction
Using a natural weight loss remedy to achieve the slim body that everyone wants has become a popular way to fight the battle of the bulge. While some of these natural remedies have been shown to be effective, it's important to be aware that others have no beneficial effects at all, and worse, can pose a danger to your health. Holistic supplements such as ephedra have been shown to cause heart problems, and natural diuretics such as dandelion can cause dehydration and abnormalities with electrolytes.

Helping America lose weight is already a multi-billion dollar industry. One of the most popular forms of weight loss aid are those claiming to be a natural weight loss remedy. Although there are some that have been found to be effective aids, some of these supplements can be ineffective or even dangerous. Here is a brief discussion of the various supplements used in a typical natural weight loss remedy.

Ephedra Alkaloids and Caffeine Compounds

For a long time, one of the most common ingredients found in a natural weight loss remedy is that of Ephedra sinica, sometimes referred to as Ma Huang. These alkaloids are often combined with natural caffeine sources to help with the body's consumption of calories, in theory leading to rapid weight loss. However, further studies have indicated that increased use of these supplements can lead to rapid heartbeat, and even cardiac arrest. Because of this, the use of these supplements to aid in weight loss is strongly discouraged.

Chromium and Ginseng

Another pair of mineral and herbal supplements that are often found in a natural weight loss remedy are those of chromium and ginseng. If the hype is to be believed, these two typical ingredients of a natural weight loss remedy can modulate carbohydrate metabolism, which may affect a body's composition and weight. However, there is absolutely no scientific evidence that indicates that this claim is based on fact.

Psyllium and Guar Gum

Very often a natural weight loss remedy contains sources of soluble fiber, which theoretically could absorb water within the gut, causing a feeling of fullness. Although the idea makes sense in theory, there is little evidence of the overall caloric intake being decreased due to these supplements as a part of a natural weight loss remedy. In addition, some people can have a severe allergic reaction to psyllium, making it a dangerous ingredient for them.

Natural Diuretics

Another class of supplements that is often used in a natural weight loss remedy is that of natural diuretics. Diuretics are items that act to increase water elimination or as a laxative. One of the most common examples of these types of supplements is the dandelion. While it does not appear to have any unique adverse effects, it can have adverse effects similar to those of conventional diuretics and laxatives such as dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities.

These are but a few of the ingredients seen in a typical natural weight loss remedy. It is important to remember that the words natural or herbal does not indicate safe. While some supplements might work for you, the better approach would be to consult with a weight loss specialist and a doctor who can help you lose weight and keep it off.
